Heritage, Communities & Participation in Thailand

Seminar and Collaborative Workshop

6-8 November 2023, Condorcet Campus

Our seminar and collaborative workshop has aimed to share knowledge and experiences about participative heritage practices and politics in Thailand.

With a special focus on the architectural and urban heritage of the ordinary city, it has examined the processes that involve communities in heritage-making and conservation practices, with insights about the role of local academics, activists, and associations as facilitators in those processes.

The seminar has been organised in the framework of the international research network « Creating and Mapping the Heritage of the Ordinary City » (CREMA) and in collaboration with four institutional partners: namely, Chulalongkorn University, the laboratory Géographie-Cités (UMR 8504), the Centre Asie du Sud-Est (CASE, UMR 8170), and AUSser (UMR 3329).

The objective of the seminar has been triple:

  • share and disseminate knowledge about heritage in contemporary Thailand;
  • build up our partnership within the CREMA network, and work together towards the preparation of the 2024 edition of the summer school « Urban Knowledge Across Borders » (UTAB) which will be organised in Bangkok on the theme of the ordinary heritage of the old historical core of Rattanakosin.
